Today I helped a designer, Erik Lukas, go from zero experience coding web apps to pushing a live application to Heroku. He setup Ruby, Rails, RVM, Git, SSH Keys and MongoDB for his local dev environment all in under an hour. I was a bit shocked at how easy it was. I’ve been coding since I was a teenager and never once was it that simple to setup the environment for a brand new technology stack. Not even when I first learned Rails!
Erik is a startup founder with a product where he wrote no lines of code. But now he can jump right in and code his own designs in collaboration with other developers. There’s absolutely no reason these days to be a designer who can’t code.
If you’re a designer, do you code?
